This area of the site will give a brief outline of fire safety regulations within the British Building Standards, along with some links for you to look deeper into more specific areas as and when required.

Fire Proofing

Fireproofing is where materials are treated to make them more resistant to fire. Fireproofing is also done on the structure of buildings (i.e: to steel to ensure the structure remained below the critical temperature of around 540c to reduce the risk of failures in event of fire)

The test to which materials need to adhere is the BS476 series. The link below shows these tests, and which areas they cover:

Fire Stopping


At gaps in the building fabric, such as when gas, electric and water supplies penetrate, firestops are required. A firestop is a collection of materials put together which help to suppress the spread of fire through these gaps. Firestops are measured for their resistance to fire on individual cases, not as separate components. The link below shows in more detail the role of a firestop:
