Recycled Architecture

The world is trying to go green and architects are doing their part by trying to use recycled materials and objects in the design of new buildings.

There have been numerous ways recycled materials have been used to create buildings in the past as recycling is by no means a new idea. Some rather odd and unusual materials/objects have been used and these have included straw bales, glass bottles, rubber tyres to disused railway box cars and large shipping containers.

Shipping Container buildings

Shipping Container architecture has become rather popular lately due to there strength, wide availability and relatively low cost. The containers can be arranged and stacked numerous ways to give an infinite amounts of possible design ideas that can be used with this method. They obviously also have disadvantages which include its inherent temperature problems due to the steel form conducting a lot of heat. However the main downside is it may be difficult to obtain building permits as many councils have not seen this kind if architecture and the lack of documented cases and legislative problems inherent with it.

1300 shipping pallets were used to create the building below. The material was picked due to once again its abundance low cost and strength. The building was used as meeting place and media room for local athletes. The design was supposed to resemble that of a cave and from outside as a piece of art as light was allowed to go through the slats of the pallets. Back in 2005 it was supposed t make people think of using more common unusually disposable materials for building and recycling which was a relatively new concept then.

Other Recycled materials

Once a material has become useless some architects and designers have decided to reuse them in the design and creation of new building. Straw bales, glass bottles, cans and even care tyres are but to name a few of the objects used rather commonly around the world. It should be remembered that people not only use these items as they like the look of the aesthetically but also because it may be all that is available to them on a low budget and they are readily available and in some cases regarded as rubbish and waste products.
